Command OHV Twin Cylinder Head Mounting Instructions
Effective with serial
number 3002411871, some Command twins now have the cylinder heads mounted with
studs, washers, and nuts, instead of the previous hex. flange screws.
Due to
a difference in cylinder head machining, it is important to use the same style
hardware that the engine had as original equipment from the factory.
Do not
attempt to interchange one style for the other, or intermix the
components.
WARNING Accidental Starts can cause severe injury or death.
Disconnect and ground spark plug lead(s) before servicing.
To Install –
Determine whether hex. flange screws or studs were originally used to retain the
cylinder heads.
If hex. flange screws were used:
1. Refer to the
applicable service manual (Section 11, Reassembly) and install the cylinder
heads as outlined under the heading Install Cylinder Heads. It is no
longer necessary to replace the screws each time the head is removed.
Unless the screws are damaged or questionable, they may be reused. Lightly
lubricate the threads with engine oil, but be careful not to get any oil on the
gasket sealing surfaces.
2. Torque the head bolts in two steps; first to
22.6 N•m (200 in. lb.), then to 41.8 N•m (370 in. lb.), in the sequence shown in
manual.
If studs, washers, and nuts were used:
1. Refer to the
applicable service manual (Section 11, Reassembly) and install the cylinder
heads as outlined under the heading Install Cylinder Heads. Make sure each head
is situated properly on the dowel pins, and flat on the crankcase/head gasket
before proceeding.
2. Lightly lubricate the exposed (upper ) threads of the
studs with engine oil. Install a new flat washer and hex. nut onto each of the
studs. Torque the hex. nuts in two stages; first to 16.9 N•m (150 in. lb.), then
to 35.5 N•m (315 in. lb.), in the sequence shown in manual.
Follow the service manual to reassemble the balance of the
engine.
